Entering the Year of the Fire Horse
Gloria Santiago • March 30, 2026
On February 17, we enter the Lunar Year of the Fire Horse - shedding the skin of the Snake and stepping into a year that does not circle back.
What follows is a conversation between the Snake and the Fire Horse. Between shedding and ignition. Between who we were and who we are becoming.
“I want to go back.”
You can’t.
“Why?”
Because you’ve seen the mechanism.
You’ve seen how the thought was installed.
How the fear was rehearsed.
How the loyalty was conditioned.
You can’t unknow choreography once you’ve watched it from above.
Silence.
“It felt safer before.”
Sedation often does.
“I didn’t have to think.”
No.
You only had to react.
“And now?”
Now reaction burns.
Now the old sentences don’t sit in your mouth the same way.
They taste manufactured.
They taste assigned.
“I feel like I’m losing myself.”
You are losing versions.
Versions built for belonging.
Versions built for outrage.
Versions built for applause.
They cannot survive scrutiny.
“I’m afraid of standing alone.”
You won’t be alone.
But there will be fewer masks breathing.
Fewer slogans disguised as thoughts.
Fewer reflexes calling themselves morals.
Fewer identities crowding your spine.
Awareness is subtraction.
The interior thins.
The noise evacuates.
And what remains does not argue.
It observes.
“It feels final.”
It is.
Shedding is not symbolic.
It is biological.
Skin once shed cannot be reattached.
And the fire that follows -
it is not celebration.
It is direction.
It does not flicker for approval.
It does not warm the old structures.
It consumes what cannot withstand clarity.
The horse does not circle back to its stall.
It runs.
Forward is not a choice now.
It is the only geometry available.
You will not go back.
Not because you are brave.
But because you have seen.
And seeing
is irreversible.
